This Blue Coconut Lime Margarita has an almost creamy texture, a hint of tequila, a splash of pineapple juice with coconut flavors, and the tangy zing of limes. I use Jumex Nectar to make this cocktail smooth and easy to drink. I've added a little coconut rum as well to give it a nice coconut flavor. If you love blue drink cocktails, you will love this new creation of mine.
Then & Now
The origins of the Margarita can be traced back to Mexico, where the cocktail is believed to have been first crafted during the 1930s.
Various legends surround the creation of the margarita, but the most popular one attributes its invention to Carlos "Danny" Herrera, a bartender in Tijuana. According to the tale, Herrera concocted the Margarita for a customer who was allergic to all spirits except tequila. To cater to the customer's preferences, he combined tequila, lime juice, and triple sec (orange liqueur), serving it in a salt-rimmed glass.
These days, margaritas come in all flavors and sizes. Every fruit you can think of has been turned into a margarita. The one thing they must all have in common? TEQUILA! Let's say that again together,...TEQUILA! (My mind goes right to Pee-Wee's Great Adventures.)
What type of tequila should I use in a blue margarita?
Look for Clear. Blanco. 100% Blue Agave. Azul.
There are many wonderful brands. We have been using Cabo Wabo lately. Cabo Wabo is made from the best part of the blue agave plant. The brand was created by former Van Halen singer Sammy Hagar. According to Liquor.com:
"Cabo Wabo Blanco is made with 100% blue agave at the Destiladora San Nicolás in Tequila, Mexico. The agave, which matures for eight to 12 years, is baked in wood-fired ovens, and the liquid is separated from the plant with roller mills. The tequila ferments naturally and is distilled twice in stainless steel stills. Like most blanco expressions, it’s unaged."
This is a great mid-range tequila for mixing in cocktails. I wouldn't pay much more than $30 for tequila that gets mixed with a bunch of juices and other liquors. $30 dollars you say? HEY!
It's your tomorrow
(Right now),
C'mon, it's everything
(Right now),
Catch a magic moment, do it
Right here and now
It means everything. 🙂
Ingredients
This is not your classic margarita recipe.
The Blue Margarita with Coconut flavor is a delightful twist on the classic recipe, infusing it with tropical and fruity flavors. To create this enchanting beverage, you'll need the following key ingredients:
- Blue Curacao: The blue color we all recognize is from Blue Curacao liqueur. The distinct blue color of this liqueur adds a visually appealing touch to the cocktail. It also contributes a mild orange flavor, balancing the lime and coconut elements perfectly.
- 100% Blue Agave Tequila, Clear: To ensure an authentic Margarita taste, using good quality tequila is crucial. Most liquor stores sell a variety of mid-range tequilas, just make sure to get one without the worms. Yuk. I'm sure some tequila experts may disagree but worms and my island-inspired coconut margarita do not belong in the same sentence. Any good tequila will be delightful.
- Coconut Rum: I've always been a fan of Malibu Coconut Rum. Any coconut rum will do. It's just to distinguish this as a truly COCONUT cocktail.
- Jumex Pineapple-Coconut Nectar: This delightful nectar elevates the tropical essence of the Margarita, infusing it with the tropical flavors of pineapple and coconut. Jumex is a product of Mexico and is usually found in the beverage section at the grocery store alongside soda. It may also be located in the International Foods Aisle. If you can't find it, try Fresh Pineapple Juice or Pineapple Juice in the can labeled as 100% juice. How To Juice a Fresh Pineapple
- Fresh Limes: Freshly squeezed lime juice is the heart of any Margarita, including this Blue Coconut and Lime Margarita. Its zesty and tangy notes add a burst of freshness. You can use bottled lime juice but I prefer fresh lime juice.
- Blue Agave Syrup. One Tablespoon per cocktail.
Optional Garnishes
Complete your Blue Margarita with a fresh lime wheel, a sprinkle of unsweetened coconut, and possibly a cocktail umbrella.
- A Little Bit of Unsweetened Shredded Coconut: To add a touch of texture and reinforce the coconut flavor, garnishing the rim of the glass with unsweetened shredded coconut is a nice addition. You can rub some of the agave syrup on the rim and then dip it. But honestly, I just love to sprinkle the coconut right on the top. I get a little chew in between sips!
- Fruit: Lime Wheel, a Juicy Red Maraschino Cherry, Fresh Orange Slice, Pineapple Wedge: I'm all about fruited-up cocktails. If you have it, add it!
