Then & Now
Bisquick Chicken and Dumplings is a classic that many of us grew up on. The dumplings are fluffy, like a wet biscuit. Ironically, my mom never made it with Bisquick. She always made the thin chewy dumplings. That's great too, but a totally different thing.
Bisquick Dumplings are a creation from the brand. More like biscuits, the dumplings are light in texture and float on the top of the creamy chicken broth. Variations of Chicken and Dumplings using Bisquick appear in almost every community cook book known to man!
There are also many different variations over the years in the cook books published by Betty Crocker for Bisquick. Check out the Vintage Bisquick Tin!
The first time I had this was as a teenager at a friends house. Her mom had made it in a crock-pot and I totally loved it.
I've made many variations over the years for my own family, but have always used raw chicken. There is a recipe that sometimes appears on the back or side of the Bisquick box.
It's a lot more work and time to cook raw chicken or deboning a whole chicken. Also, you then it have to let it cool and then chop or pull it. Unnecessary work. I've changed my ways and now I'm making it with pre-cooked Rotisserie Chicken.
This is how I make it with only Four ingredients (plus water), and I'm happy to share this recipe with you.
This version is stick-to-your-ribs filling. Big fluffy dumplings and loads of chicken, with a thick chicken flavored gravy broth to hold it all together.
Rotisserie Chicken and Dumplings
I've said it in another recipe about rotisserie chicken. They are not all great. I get most of mine from Sam's Club. I've had a few that were WAY TOO flavored, preserved, too salty and it ruined what I was making.
Sam's Club Rotisserie Chickens are the best around here and they are only about $5.00. Check out my other super easy recipe using rotisserie chicken in a slow cooker Crock Pot Poppy Seed Chicken Casserole.
The rotisserie chicken adds so much flavor to the broth, you really don't need to chop up a bunch of veggies or add a ton of seasonings. You can if you want to and I'll give you some suggestions at the bottom of this recipe.
The Easiest Chicken and Dumplings Recipe
I recently read another recipe post using Bisquick. It looked so delicious. However, it had a long list of ingredients. If I were going to use that many ingredients, I would not be using a shortcut product like Bisquick to make the dumplings. Bisquick ... it pretty much says it in the name, "Quick."
Using a Rotisserie chicken, you have a flavored tender chicken all ready-to-go! Then add it to the Knorr Chicken Bouillon that has, "real vegetables and spices."
Just for the record, I do not do any paid promotions so I only show ingredients I really love and use.
I wrote this recipe and cut it down to the bare minimum. The Bisquick came in a bulk box at Sam's Club and I found this great deal at Walmart for Knorr Chicken Base (Pollo De Caldo) in a gigantic jar for just about 5.00. Wow!
Often, I use Better Than Bouillon in the jar but this powder has a bit of extra flavor and goes a lot longer. I expected it to be granules but it's an actual powder. In short, a better deal and the flavor is delicious.
Ingredients
How To Make Chicken and Dumplings With Bisquick on the Stovetop
*** You need a pot with a lid to make this recipe.
- In a big pot, whisk cold water, bouillon powder, and ½ cup of Bisquick. Set aside.
- Stir 2 cups Bisquick with ¾ cup of milk. Set aside.
- Pull and skin your rotisserie chicken. You can choose the best parts that you like. Set aside.
- Heat the big pot mixture on Medium heat until it forms a creamy broth.
- Drop in the small spoonfuls of dough. Cover tightly for 20-25 minutes. The balls will quadruple in size so don't make the dough balls big or else they won't cook through fast.
Notes and Tips
You can fancy this recipe up with some of the classic ingredients.
- Right before you turn on the heat, add finely chopped onion, carrots, or celery to the chicken broth you made.
- Or, add a ½ teaspoon of dried thyme leaf or toss in a bay leaf.
- Sprinkle on some black pepper.
Leftovers
I place the dumplings separately and the chicken and gravy in separate containers. If you have a two compartment container, that works perfectly. You just don't want the dumplings getting soggy overnight. Cover with plastic wrap or use an airtight container.

Easiest Bisquick Chicken and Dumplings Quick Only 4 Ingredients
Ingredients
- 4 ½ cups cold water
- 1 Tablespoon Knorr Chicken Boullion Powder
- 2 ½ cups DIVIDED, Bisquick Baking Mix You will use ½ cup first for the broth and then 2 cups for the dumplings
- ¾ cup milk
- 1 cooked rotisserie chicken
Instructions
- Don't turn the heat on yet. In a large (not heated) heavy bottomed pot that has a lid, like a dutch oven, whisk together the cold water, soup base boullion powder, and ONLY ½ cup of the Bisquick until all lumps are dissolved. Set aside.
- Prepare the Dumplings Dough: In a medium bowl, with a spoon, stir together the remaining 2 Cups of Bisquick with ¾ cup milk. Stir until soft dough forms. Set aside.
- Prepare the Chicken: The rotisserie chicken can be cold or warm. Remove and discard the skin and bones, keeping only the good meat. Set Aside.
- Put it all together: Place the big pot mixture on the stovetop and turn heat to Medium-high heat. Continuously whisk until the mixture starts to thicken. It takes about 10 minutes. Once it is starting to thicken just a little bit and is bubbly, then you stir in the chicken. Reduce the heat to Medium.
- With a small scoop, or Tablespoon, drop little ball mounds of the dumpling dough about the size of golf balls into the pot of bubbly chicken and broth. The dumplings will swell up 4 x's the size so don't make them too big or they won't cook through.
- Place the lid on the top of the pot and do not disturb for 20-25 minutes. Continue to cook on Medium Heat. Keeping the lid on helps to steam and cook the dumplings. If you peek, don't feel guilty, you will just have to keep the lid on a little longer. 🙂
- ****Optional, sprinkle with pepper. This recipe does not need additional salt.
